Frequently Asked Questions
We get asked so many questions about food processors. Everybody cooks slightly different food so the variety of questions we get is large. Below we have tried to pick out a few of the common questions we get asked.
Do Food Processors Blend Well?
Well, this is a question that has a few answers. In a word, no they don’t. They will blend but are not as good at blending as a narrower blender. However, a lot of the food processors we have reviewed double up as a blender as well. All you have to do is remove the large food processing bowl and attach the blending jug and you have a perfect blender that will produce perfect soups and fruit smoothies in minutes.
The blenders are used for mixing softer, often liquid based foods like juices, sauces and soups that need to be finely mixed into a pourable liquid. The blender will mix in more air and the blades are designed to work at a very high speed and work with liquids.
The food processor on the other hand will blend to a point but is not designed for it. The food processor is best used for chopping, slicing and shredding ingredients into equal size bits for cooking things like chillies and casseroles where the chopping can take a long time.
Our recommendation is to buy a food processor that includes a blender jug so that you have the best of both worlds. You may find that a food processor on it’s own is just not up to the job. Have a look at the Kenwood FPM910 Multi-Pro Excel Food Processor and the Philips HR7762/91 Compact 3-in-1 Food Processor for a great all round food processors and blenders. The beauty of owning a food processor with a blender attachment is that you don’t need to spend a lot of money on two separate tools, they are easy to clean and store and a great investment.
Do Food Processors Minced Meat?
This is a common question that we get asked by many people wanting to use it for meat dishes. A food processor will sort of mince cooked meat but really what it is doing is chopping the meat up finely not giving you a proper mince that you would get out of a dedicated mincer.
To get the mince finely chopped you need to pulse it or you will end up with a sludgy meat liquid that is pretty unpleasant. Just putting it in the processor and blasting it for a few minutes will not work and you will end up disappointed.
For some types of food processor you can buy a meat grinder attachment that will allow you to grind down raw meat into mince for a great shepherds pie but our recommendation would be to buy a separate mincer that will do the job properly.
Where Can I Get Food Processor Recipes?
Food processors have become one of the most used kitchen aids over the last thirty years. They have taken the hassle factor out of many time consuming dishes that would have had a long preparation time. Apart from the basics like chopping onions and other veg we get asked a lot about actual recipes for the food processor.
Some models have a few basic recipes in the manuals that come with the model. If you are looking to be a bit more adventurous and try out some really tricky recipes or foods that you have not tried before there are a number of specific food processor recipe books available. There are also a lot of online resources for advice, tips and recipes on how to use your food processor in different ways.
Once you have experimented with a few different ways of using the food processor you will be amazed at just how versatile and useful these kitchen aids can be. Many people use then daily for all sorts of cooking and preparation.
Are Food Processors Loud?
We get asked this a lot by parents that are working in the kitchen when the children are asleep.
Some of the cheaper food processors are very loud. They have less powerful universal electric motors that have to work a lot harder to spin the blades and the insulation in the main unit will not be so good. These mechanical motors have a lot of moving parts that create a lot of noise. They get the job one well but you may end up with sore ears if you are using them a lot.
If noise is a problem then you should look at the food processors that are fitted with induction motors. These brushless electric motors are way quieter than the cheaper motors and have less touching parts. The motor is spun using magnets which is much quieter.
If noise is an issue then it is wise to look at the Magimix food processors that are all fitted with induction motors. We have reviewed the Magimix 5200XL Food Processor and the Magimix 4200XL Food Processor.
My Food Processors Keep Burning Out. What Should I Do?
If your food processors keep burning out then you have a few options. They often burn out because of constant heavy use. If you are making a lot of dough or chopping a lot of very hard vegetables then the motor will have to work very hard and is more likely to burn out.
The cheaper models tend to have less powerful motors which will burn out more easily than the powerful models that have motors that are over 1,000 watts. If you are a heavy user then it is wise to get the most powerful motor that you can afford.
One thing to really consider if you are using your food processor a lot if the type of motor you are using. Some of the high end food processors are fitted with induction motors that are much less likely to burn out than the universal electric motors you will find in the cheaper models.
The induction motor is powered by magnets and has a lot less touching parts in the motor so there is a lot less to burn out. The universal electric motors have brushes and often mechanical gear boxes that are all prone to burn out with heavy use. When these cheaper motors are put under a heavy load these moving parts can often struggle, whereas the induction motors only have the magnets spinning the motor which won’t burn out.
Have a look at the Magimix 5200XL Food Processor and the Magimix 5200XL Food Processor for great food processors fitted with induction motors.
Can I Sharpen My Food Processor Blade?
For many is us we have trusty food processors that have been working for many years with no problem. Often the unit is in great condition and the bowls are spotless but the blades start to get a bit worn and don’t chop as well.
The best thing to do is to replace the blades. Most manufacturers will sell replacement blades at a very reasonable price and will get your food processor back to chopping and slicing to the highest standard. Sharpening the blades can be difficult as they are generally quite awkward shapes not a straight edge like a knife.
